Where
can we shop for food or eat out on our family canal day out or break?
You do not need to trudge the
towpaths for miles with overflowing supermarket bags your options are
endless and far more inviting!
One of the beauties and often said treasures of the British canals are
the Canal side pubs. There is one on average every 5 miles. They offer
anything from a traditional pint to the finest cuisine and really are an
essential part of the canal experience. What better than to cruise the
canal all day and reward yourself with a refreshing and well earned
drink sitting by the canal on a beautiful summers evening. Heaven
As well
as the pubs actually along the banks of the canals and rivers there are,
of course, all the tens of thousands of village, town and city pubs,
inns and hotels which are often well worth a short walk in the evening.
Nearly all British villages have their own inns and pubs, no matter how
small, and these are the best way to take a peek at local life. Town and
city pubs vary greatly, their variety is their strength and all you have
to do is pick the ones that suit you best!
Many canal holidaymakers enjoy the great outdoors by having Barbeques.
Very little can beat mooring up for the evening and lighting the
barbeque and taking in the beautiful, peaceful surroundings. This
alfresco experience is priceless and indeed for those on a budget the
canal holiday catering need not break the bank!
There are of course towns, villages with shops within easy walking
distance where you can stock up on the essentials. |

Is a
family canal holiday hard work?
If you hire a boat then normally, with
the exception of a few rivers and wide canals, you have to work the
locks yourself. This is quite hard work, winding up paddles to fill and
empty locks and pushing on heavy lock gates but all the same very
enjoyable. |

Can we
bring the Dog with us on our canal break?
It's never been easier to take your
dog on holiday with you! The rural countryside allows you to take some
lovely walks and because canal boats travel at 3 miles per hour it is
not difficult to keep up if you want to walk along side. There will be
no shortage of things to do as you can spend days visiting Historical
Parks, Castles, Steam Railways whatever is on offer in the area you
choose. Most attractions welcome dogs along with most canalside pubs. |

What
happens if we break down?
This happens very rarely, but if such
an event should happen you will be supplied by your canal boat company
with a 24hr call number. The hire firm will come out to you as soon as
possible. |

On our
family canal holiday are there any rules we have adhere to when
operating the boat?
Here are a few basic rules of canal
boating:-
1.There is a 4 mph speed limit. Please adhere here to this as the 'wash'
from boats destroys the canal banks.
2.You must pass boats on the right hand side, however you can cruise in
the centre if nothing is coming!
3.Try to avoid cutting across shallow corners, the boat will steer more
easily in deeper water.
4. Don't moor in other boaters way, like close to locks or on tight
bends. |
